DVD is this coming to an end?

Let's answer that question by first looking at the previous format VHS Videotape. VHS was invented by JVC and it eventually won the format war against Video 2000 and Betamax. Actually DVD didn't really have a format war although recording onto disc had been flirted with before DVD took off but never really caught on due to the poor amount of space that could be recorded onto it. Remember VCD?

VHS actually ended as a format in 2007 when the recorders stopped being made. Its death knell really began with the advent of digital television and the end of analogue. Video recorders could not record the digital signal and so the end of VHS was inevitable, Consumers began to record onto hard drive recorders and of course DVD disc, which had been around since 1997. Gosh that was 26 years ago!! The year when Labour swept to power and the death of Diana Princess of Wales.

DVD is this coming to an end? Let us explore that question. VHS had a lifespan of just over 30 years with the new format 'DVD' being around for 10 years before its demise. How long has streaming been around? Probably six or seven years! Could we therefore see the end of DVD in another three years? Possibly!

I do ask clients if they have a DVD player and I would say 50% of the time the answer is no. The consumer is definitely moving to the streaming form of entertainment but people still do want the physical media. Blu ray is disc based and so is 4kUHD format and they continue to sell well. It's just that DVD is of Standard Definition quality. Virtually everybody watches TV, their favourite movies in HD now and on the lookout for something even better in picture and sound. 8k is no longer thought about, it's a reality.

We will continue to transfer VHS, Camcorder Tapes and Cine Films to DVD for as long as the customer wants them and that sees no signs of fading away just yet but more and more clients are requesting USB transfers. DVD is going to be around for a while yet though but not for ever, people do still love the physical media and we give you your preserved memories onto DVD in a really nice case with artwork tailored to you. Customers choose us because of the great final product.
